Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys laments overtime penalties rather than fourth-down conversions.
GREEN BAY, WI – Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is the most familiar with Lambeau Field, having coached for parts of 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
McCarthy passed on a 53-yard field goal into the wind on fourth-and-3 from the Green Bay 35-yard line on the first possession of overtime Sunday, and Dak Prescott instead threw incomplete. Six plays later, the Dallas Cowboys were defeated 31-28 by the Green Bay Packers, dropping them to third place in the NFC East.
McCarthy said, "We were right on the line for a field goal." "To be honest, I thought we should just go for it. I mean, with the way the game was going, I called it on second down. Penalty for a big play. Penalty for a big play. Penalty for a big play. So all we had to do was keep playing. We made sound decisions. Obviously, I agree with the decision on fourth-and-3. Simply did not convert."
During overtime, McCarthy was visibly upset, especially after two penalties (offside on wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, holding on Connor McGovern) wiped out Tony Pollard's gains of 9 and 16 yards as the Cowboys were marching toward a potential winning touchdown.
"I thought we had complete control in overtime," McCarthy explained. "Obviously, very frustrated with penalties and other things. But you must overcome these obstacles. This group, this group of men, they've got it. But I'm sorry for their disappointment."
McCarthy's players were also disappointed.
