Ran Carthon leaves the 49ers, and the team gains two compensatory picks in the 2023 draft.

The Titans have hired Ran Carthon, one of the 49ers' front-office executives. However, the Niners will receive two compensatory NFL Draft picks as a result of the transaction.

One of the disadvantages of being a successful franchise is that other teams will come calling to recruit talent from the organization.

The San Francisco 49ers have had plenty of this in recent years, both on the coaching and front office sides.

In terms of the latter, the Niners lost Martin Mayhew, vice president of player personnel, to the Washington Commanders at the start of 2021. However, because of the rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and executives who go on to bigger roles elsewhere, that transaction helped San Francisco get more compensatory picks in the following year's NFL Draft.

The 49ers have excelled in this role as well, not only with Mayhew but also with assistant coaches to head coach Kyle Shanahan, such as coordinators like Robert Saleh and Mike McDaniel, who both took over as head coaches with the New York Jets (2021) and Miami Dolphins (2022), respectively.

Despite the fact that these hires have forced Shanahan and the company to delve deeper into the coaching tree.

Because of Ran Carthon's hiring, the 49ers will receive two compensatory picks in the NFL Draft.

After spending multiple assets to trade up for quarterback Trey Lance in 2021 and then acquiring running back Christian McCaffrey halfway through the 2022 season, the 49ers are significantly short on draft capital.

However, due to a rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and assistants, the Niners are set to receive two additional compensatory draft picks in Round 3.

One will be selected in the 2023 NFL Draft later this spring, while the other in the 2024 draft.

San Francisco already has three compensatory picks in the 2023 draft and will receive another as a result of Carthon's hire.

The 49ers also have two picks in Rounds 5 and 7.
