Lionel Scaloni's contract with Argentina has been extended until the 2026 World Cup.

Scaloni, Argentina's Qatar World Cup-winning coach, and AFA president Claudio Tapia met in Paris on Monday before the FIFA awards, where the former was named men's world coach of the year.

Lionel Scaloni, a World Cup winner, will remain Argentina's coach until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

On Monday, the Argentine Football Association and Scaloni confirmed the agreement. They didn't go into detail.

Scaloni, 44, and AFA president Claudio Tapia met in Paris before the FIFA awards, where Scaloni was named men's world coach of the year late Monday.

"When trust is high, communication is clear and effective," Tapia wrote on Twitter, alongside a photo of himself and Scaloni smiling and drinking tea in Paris. "We continue to put our faith in Lionel Scaloni, the World Cup-winning coach, for our national team project."

Scaloni's contract expired on December 18 after Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar. Long negotiations ensued.

He led Argentina to its first Copa America title in 28 years in 2021. Captain Lionel Messi and other key players have repeatedly stated that they want Scaloni to stay on as coach for the 2026 World Cup.

Scaloni said at the awards ceremony in Paris, "The most beautiful thing is making your country, your people happy."

Argentina's first match since Qatar — and another celebration of the world champion — will be a friendly against Panama on March 23 at Buenos Aires' Estadio Monumental.
