Bodycam video shows Memphis police beating a Black man like a 'human piata,' according to his family.
Tyre Nichols' family, who died days after being arrested and beaten by Memphis police, has spoken out after seeing a video of the incident.
Nichols, 29, died on January 10, three days after a traffic stop turned into a fight with police that landed him in the hospital.
Before the footage was made public on Monday, family members and their attorneys met with Memphis police and reviewed it.
A civil rights lawyer, Ben Crump described the video as "appalling, heinous, violent, and troubling."
"From simple traffic stops, we're seeing evidence of what happens to Black and brown people," Mr. Crump said. "A simple traffic stop should not result in your death."
"Unfortunately, it reminded us of (the) Rodney King video," Mr. Crump added.
While being beaten, Nichols was described as a "human piata" by attorney Antonio Romanucci. Following the incident, five officers, all of whom were Black, were fired from the department.
Two other firefighters involved in the traffic stop have also been placed on leave.
