Lionel Messi Will Not Resign From World Cup Throne
Much of the discussion leading up to the 2022 World Cup focused on who would perform their final dance at FIFA's ultimate party. There were reportedly many leading lights on the verge of being extinguished.
Cristiano Ronaldo, as superhuman as he appears, cannot go on forever, and the weight of expectation placed on Neymar's shoulders by Brazil is beginning to weigh on him.
There was also Lionel Messi. With no World Cup medals to his name, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was expected to retire from international football if an elusive title slipped through his grasp once more.
By inspiring Argentina to victory in Qatar, he won any GOAT debate. With a famous trophy in hand, the obvious question after the ticker tape was removed was: Will Messi appear in another World Cup?
Although we are still more than three years away from the next global gathering, Argentina is currently priced at 9/1 to successfully defend its title when traveling north from South America to the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Messi's presence could bring that price down quickly, but no final decision on his participation has been made as of yet. Many people believe that the most mercurial of No.10s will extend his career far enough to compete in another major tournament. Lionel Messi, Argentina's coach
Messi has won the FIFA Best Men's Player of the Year award for 2023, and an eighth Golden Ball is on the way, so his career appears to be on track. To be fair, he could probably show up in flip-flops and a cocktail at the 2026 World Cup and still be a member of Argentina's squad.
He has earned the right to pretty much do whatever he wants, with nothing left to achieve at the highest level. Unrelenting ambition, on the other hand, allows such heights to be scaled, and you get the impression that Messi will not want to relinquish his World Cup throne without putting up some kind of fight to the many.
