Met Gala 2023: Celebrities gather for event Lagerfeld, Karl
Few fashion events are as large, Instagram-worthy, and in high demand as New York City's annual Met Gala.
The event is known for its star-studded guest list and extravagant outfits, and this year's theme is Karl Lagerfeld, the late fashion icon.
The invitation-only gala also benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
This year's event was expected to draw approximately 400 guests.
Attendees were asked to dress "in honor of Karl" for this year's theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."
The designer, who died in 2019 at the age of 85, wore dark sunglasses with his white hair pulled back into a ponytail most of the time. He was frequently photographed with his famously spoiled cat, Choupette.
This year's co-chairs are retired tennis star Roger Federer, Grammy-winning songstress Dua Lipa, actress Penélope Cruz, writer, actor, and producer Michaela Coel, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Brittney Griner, the WNBA basketball star imprisoned in Russia, attended the event with her wife on Monday night.
The Metropolitan Museum's Great Hall was decorated with 275,000 pink roses last year. However, the decorations pale compared to the outfits worn by celebrities as they enter the event.
The focus of the public's attention, however, is on the red carpet and the extravagant outfits of those in attendance, which included Kim Kardashian wearing a $4.8 million (£3.84 million) rhinestone-studded dress once worn by Marilyn Monroe last year.
Kardashian wore a Schiaparelli design dripping in pearls this year, inspired by a visit to the Karl Lagerfeld office in Paris last week, where she said she was getting "a little inspiration for the Met."
"I just wanted to feel glamourous," she told Vogue on the red carpet. "I wanted pearls, Karl," I said.
Her sisters Kylie and Kendall were also present.
Individual tickets for this year's event start at $50,000, with tables starting at $300,000.
Priyanka Chopra and Elle Fanning, Brooklyn, and Nicola Peltz-Beckham, and Rita Ora were among those in attendance.
Rapper Lil Nas X arrived dressed as a mythical creature, adorned in pearls and painted silver.
Embattled actor Jonathan Majors was also scheduled to attend as a guest of Valentino, but "mutually agreed" not to attend after being charged with assault in a March incident.
Choupette the cat, another notable invitee who did not attend this year, was dressed as the feline by pop star Doja Cat and actor Jared Leto.
"Many people invited me to walk the Met Gala 2023 red carpet in tribute to Daddy, but we preferred to stay cozy and at home," the cat's official Instagram page stated. "We've been paying tribute to my Daddy every day since his death, and we're very moved to see another day dedicated to him."
Although the private event was not televised, the Red Carpet was televised and live streamed on Vogue's social media platforms.
