Hugo Lloris of France faces history in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final against Argentina.
Hugo Lloris was France's captain four years ago in Russia when they defeated Croatia in the FIFA World Cup final.
Doha:
Hugo Lloris will face Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2022 semifinals on Sunday at the Kalifa Stadium in Qatar. The France goalkeeper, who led the team to victory in Russia four years ago, has a chance to become the first captain of a national team to win the coveted trophy for a second time.
Lloris, 35, has been in superb form throughout the tournament. The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper was rock solid under the bar in his third FIFA World Cup (first in 2014), making spectacular saves against England and Morocco in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
Several players have previously won more than one World Cup, but no one has ever won twice as a captain. Consider the case of Brazilian Bellini. He led Brazil to victory in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. Bellini was called to Chile four years later but had to sit on the bench behind Mauro Ramos. In 1962, Brazil won the World Cup.
Dunga, another Brazilian legend, had the opportunity to win the trophy twice as captain in 1998. After winning the World Cup in the United States in 1994, Brazil reached the final again in 1998 but was defeated by Zinedine Zidane's France at home.
Late Argentina legend Diego Maradona could have made the list as well, but after leading his country to victory in 1986, he lost the final to Italy in 1990. Going back even further, Italian Giuseppe Meazza won two World Cups in 1934 and 1938, but only the second as captain.
